Re casting for Big Brother
September 4th 2008 02:59
Just as we were recovering from the previous pimply youth and his new found celebrity career as a result of behaving like an animal, it seems another young doyenne of the suburban party scene has decided to rise to the occasion and offer his skills as suburban social host for another free-4-all, much to the chagrin of the upstanding citizens of our illustrious community
And, again, we find the outraged getting up in arms against MySpace, mobile texting or whatever technology that might be demonized and blamed for all the ills in our society
This superficial approach seems to be rather popular at present i.e. cries of licensing law reforms etc to curb teenage binge drinking and anti social behaviour……
I am thinking of an incident told to me by someone I know well whose teenage daughter wished to throw a small party while parents were away for the evening. On Mum and Dads return later that night they had found all hell had broken loose with hundreds of drunken teenagers going berserk all over the property. This was suburban Auckland New Zealand in the early 70’s - not much in the way of internet or mobile technologies going on at that point in time and place - somebody had done the circuit of all the local pubs writing up details of the party on the darts score blackboards!
Anyway, point of anecdote? When are we going stop taking the easy option of shooting the messenger and start asking the difficult questions of what’s happened to a society that produces young people who feel the need to get completely off their face and behave violently!
