"She Works Hard For The Money"

A number of famous recording artistes are up in arms about owning the rights to their material (as performers, and as composers) and about time too! Unfortunately this has been the nature of the beast since recording labels came into existence in the early twentieth century and company owners would, for example, buy songs from starving black blues artists for a few cents and hand them over to “Names” for them to record and sail up the hit parade with. And, 80something years later not too dissimilar behaviour within the industry continues – one has to ask why? Is there inherently a lack of interest from the artiste to take the bull by the horns and take responsibility for investing the energy into managing their business with as much passion as they would their art…?
Well, apparently a number of Pop/Rock Stars are getting together and starting up some sort of union. It seems odd that the PRS (Performing Right Society) would appear to not be in a position to deal with this, after all they’ve been making sure that most mere mortal composers, songwriters and performers (originally within the UK then later worldwide) have been getting their fair financial dues since 1914. So one has to ask what these artistes are reading before they sign and how desperate they are to scramble to the top of the heap.
Hmmm, I wonder how many of these personalities who are making a “song ‘n dance” about all of this, would have got anywhere at all if it were not for the media and market saturation paid for by these large labels and their substantial financial resources...
