Kiss My Ring

Thanks to an evangelical pastor in the good ol’ U S ‘v A, apparently the next trend in pop music we have to look forward to is Purity Rings – these are pieces of finger furniture that advertise to the world that the said wearer is practicing a vow of abstinence until marriage - just like the Nooky Badge (love bight) but in reverse - so popular when I was a youngster.
There is certainly nothing wrong with not bothering about sex – actually there’s a lot to be said for it! (Especially when you get to my sort of vintage!!) But why the need for a sociocultural icon heralding another reactionary, neoconservative meme…!?
A fan of a certain ring wearing pop group of brothers (No! not the Bee Gees!) Passionately threw down the gauntlet and trumpeted "I just wanna say, it's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut, OoowKaay?" which sadly and somewhat alarmingly sums up the whole “Yer either with ‘s er against ‘s” attitude that comes out of that country and ends up creating pain for the rest of us on planet Earth. Not all of us aspire to be the Virgin Mary or "Debby Does Dallas”. A surprising number of the human race are intelligent enough, perceptive enough and responsible enough to enjoy a middle ground experiencing all the flavours that life has to offer, mistakes and all!
As somebody-or-other once said when it comes to the political and economic (as we’re all finding out first hand): “When America sneezes the rest of the world goes to bed with a Cold”… We can only hope they keep this nasty little Bug to themselves…
