Featuring the Top Ten Hit!

STEIM - the centre for research and development of instruments and tools for performers in the electronic performance arts has announced it’s November programme including a show curated by Raed Yassin from the Lebanese experimental mixed media group Praed, entitled Greatest Hits Concert. In the context of the, some might say, “highbrow” nature of this Amsterdam based institution, one can enjoy the vaguely cynical humour of the title’s reference - especially considering that the seminal composer of electronic composition, Karlheinz Stockhausen is supposed to have said to Mr. Yassin, himself “ Look son, if you want to release your first album; you’d better to call it The Greatest Hits”. Now - as we all know, our ol’ Karlheinz has a bit of a reputation for “farting at the dinner party” and coming out with stuff that might appear somewhat regrettable, but on this occasion (as only barking mad people often can) he rather squarely hit the nail on the head! In an industry that is always struggling to shift units, Pop ‘n Roll will continue it's marketing strategy of convincing us that it must be safe to buy cos Angela from number 23 also got it so must be OK - and the experimental scene will continue to turn it’s nose up at it’s council estate neighbours. An amusing idea from Raed and STEIM, let’s hope the gig is as engaging as the concept…
