…while we’re on the subject of violence and MySpace… when logging on with Mr. Murdoch, the other day, there was the usual feature artist on the homepage accompanied with the usual mission statement blurb and the usual posergraph that had been photoshoped fabulously and delightfully enough, the pièce de résistance centred on the artiste’s splendid silver and jewel incrusted knuckle duster!
How many decades have passed and still we find that a section of the Hip Hop/Rap/Gangsta Rap community are glorifying misogyny, rape, homophobia and in particular violence. It’s source is understandable, after all, this community has suffered a long history of being on the receiving end of appalling abuse and the writers and performers of this material justify their work as simply an observation of the socio/cultural circumstance within which they find themselves… but we’re all familiar with the human tendency towards perpetuating cycles...
If the Washington Post’s report of a 2007 national survey conducted by The University of Chicago (see link below) is anything to go by then it would appear that a substantial slice of the target audience of rap music has had enough of this sort of content and they won’t support it anymore – a cycle breaking, perhaps…?
